It was a great comfort to me and my family at that time
My family and I were comforted by this wonderful book at a very sad time of our lives. It brought a smile at times when reading some of the different quotes from people who understood how we loved our dear dog. She was a member of our family a very important member. It was a great help. Joan V.

A very beautiful reminder of a beloved pet.
My wife and I lost a Brittany Spaniel that was our child! This beautiful book has brought my wife and I a great deal of comfort as we try to cope with the amazing void "Morgan's" passing has created. A highly recommended keepsake!

Junior Johnson: Brave in Life

the roots of nascar
being a relatively new fan of nascar, and having family members that work closely with it gave me the incentive to read this book. after the untimely death of nascar great dale earnhardt, i found it difficult to watch the weekly races.they seemed to be missing an important member of nascar and my reason for tuning in every weekend. after reading this book,i have changed my mind.nascar is truly the junior johnsons, the kale yarboroughs, and the ricard pettys. they made nascar what it is today. they paved the road for the newcomers. i still miss dale, but now i find i really do have another reason to tune in. i enjoy watching. i no longer have a favorite driver. i just cheer on the front runner. the book was a good read. i reccomend it highly.

A must read story of a legend written by two legends!
Tom Higgins of the Charlotte Observer and ESPN and Steve Waid of WC Illus. can tell a story like no one else can. Mix Tom, Steve and Junior together and you get lots of NASCAR history AND sore ribs.

what a book, what a racer!
To all outward appearances Jr Johnson was a country bumpkin, yet this book shows beneath that "good ole boy" veneer was a sophisticated mind and drive on which crowds cheered and engineers with PhDs came for advice, the latter not covered by Tom Wolfe's book. A quality presentation.

Letters from the Middle Years
Published in Paperback by Chariot Victor Pub (July, 1998)
Author: Martha Morgan Kern
Average review score:

A beautiful journey
This book touched me to my core. It is written in a way that speaks to each reader's heart and soul. It is a privilege to be able to be invited into the author's life and read about feelings and perspectives that are bound to have personal meaning to all who read this creative flowing book. I really liked the fact that each chapter was it's own "stand alone" essay, each one a gift in itself to be read, re-read, thought about, and read again. This was a book that I wanted to just go on and on, I hoped that it would never end. When it did, it lived on in my mind and in my heart, I think it always will.

Tender and thought-provoking
Ms. Kern's debut book is a work of art. I found the unconventional format - a series of mythical letters written to key figures in her life - engrossing and engaging. Her style is fluid, her observations keen and her pacing and timing top-flight. This is a courageous self-exploration that should serve as a guide to those of us begining our spiritual awakening. I recommend it without reservation!

Compelling personal stories with universal relevance
Life's joys and complexities -- forgiveness, love, change, aging, acceptance, parenthood, the ongoing search for meaning -- are all explored in this book with a compelling, personal touch. Ms. Kern tells the stories of her life, her struggles, in such a way that they become our own...and they truly are our own, since all of us face the same life issues, especially in our middle years. After reading this book, I felt less alone in the world. Not only does the book seek spiritual meaning from everyday life, but it does so in a style that won't alienate those just beginning their spiritual journeys. This is an important, beautifully written chronicle of one woman's quest for faith.

The Narnia Cookbook: Foods from C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Douglas H. Gresham, Mary Kate Morgan, Pauline Baynes, and C. S. Chronicles of Narnia Lewis

Delicious, child-friendly recipes
We checked this book out from the library again and again. We loved it. There are seven very 'American' children in our family, and we ate or drank every recipe we tried from this cookbook.
The illustrations and descriptions were delightful. The recipes were tasty and appealing to all literary-minded children who have been permitted or encouraged from babyhood to have adventurous palates.
Several recipes have been oft requested birthday favorites.

Yummy. Wish it were still in print.

Delicious Food, Wonderful Fantasy
I LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia, even as a "grown-up".So I jumped at the chance to learn how to make foods described in the books.

The book is supposedly aimed at kids. I will say though, that the taste of the foods is really more adult (or English). They taste great, don't get me wrong, but kids (unless they are really excited about the recipies being Narnian) will likely think them wierd. I made the Tea Cakes with Lemon Curd Filling for a friend's kid's Communion Party, and all the adults raved--but the kids wouldn't even go near them. (Incidentally, the Tea Cakes are DELICIOUS. A wonderful treat).

A note of advice, you will need stuff like double boilers and parchment paper for some of the recipies. Plus you will have to make some trips to specialty food stores. However, most of the stuff is middling easy to make.

Overall, this is a wonderful book. I am so glad I have it. The recipies are very tasty, and the book itself provides a wonderful cornicopia of foods and ideas that Americans are not very familiar with.

Transport your family to Narnia
Having a 7-year old boy who loves The Chronicles of Narnia, this book really caught my eye. He has pored over it, and we have already made two of the recipes: Lucy's Roast Apples and Marmalade Roll. They both turned out very well, and were quite popular with the whole family.

This book has approximately 68 recipes divided into categories such as Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner, Dessert, and Drinks.

In my opinion, the mark of a good cookbook is the percentage of recipes that one would actually make. In this cookbook, there is a high percentage of the recipes that I would try.

Each recipe has a bit of commentary from Douglas Gresham, Lewis' stepson, and a quote from one of the books that lists the dish the recipe is for. The commentary is interesting and informative. There is also a foreward written by Gresham. At the end of the book are some menu ideas so that you can have a Narnian dinner party with your friends.

New Moon Sports: What Sports Can Do for You and What You Can Do With Sports
Published in Library Binding by Crown Pub (August, 1999)
Authors: New Moon Books Girls Editorial Board, Lauren Calhoun, Ashley Cofell, Morgan Fykes, Katie Hedberg, Elizabeth Larsson, Priscilla Mendoza, Julia Peters-Axtell, Caitlin Stern, and New Moon Girl's Editorial Board
Average review score:

An introduction to girls and their sports dreams
"New Moon" magazine is devoted to helping girls discover their hopes and dreams. It always has an editorial board of girls ages ten to fourteen from across the country (although it is put together here in Duluth), which certainly ensures that the perspective accurately reflects the target audience. "New Moon Sports" covers why sports are good for girls, the benefits of competition, a brief history of women in sports, and information about how to keep your body healthy. Some of the more interesting features are a look at sports myths (e.g., boys are better at sports than girls), interviews with famous athletes (Bonnie Blair and Cathy Rigby), helpful tips (e.g., Hot Soccer Tips), and lots of suggestions as to what girls can do in terms of sports. Consequently, this is a valuable introductory text. There is not a lot of depth to the information presented herein, but what is here is on valuable and on target. There are also numerous sources for additional information where girls can easily go to find out more about whatever topic interests them, whether it is body image, a particular sport, or a favorite athlete. Other equally worthwhile books from "New Moon" focus on friendship, money, and writing.

two thumbs up!
This book was written by girls just like you. It will make you laugh, smile and even cry. But most of all it will give you a wonderful sense of self confidence and help you reach out and make friends. I highly reccomend it, that is, if you want to be sure of yourself in friendships, self confident and happy with your friends. I give it a big smile and two thumbs up!

A heartfelt book dealing with issues about girls in sports
I'm a girl editor for this book. I feel that there is not enough writing out there by girls for girls. This book is just that:by girls and for girls. I feel that girls and sports mix wonderfully. They let you free to jump, kick and just be you. They let your spirit free. You don't have to worry about getting dirty(not that you have to worry anyway) and you can let passion fly. This should be known by all girls. All girls should know the adrenaline rush in jumping into a pool or surfing or kicking a ball to a teammate. This book shows you, you can go out there and get the rush of feeling strong and being part of something bigger than just you. This book shows you girls and women who are great athletes or just girls who enjoy sports. It gives you some advice on how to get started in a sport and helps you find your particular sport made just for you. I know that I have put my heart into this book for all girlkind and hope I have opened girls eyes to the wonderful opportunities they have in sports and how they can take hold of those opportunities and fly. This book is only one in a series of books written by me and seven other girls as a source for girls and their dreams. We want girls to know that they can pursue anything they want. If you have an opportunity, take it. If you have a passion, follow it. Please, disregard my rating and rate it for yourself.

NIV Mom's Devotional Bible
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (February, 1997)
Author: Elisa Morgan
Average review score:

A must-have for Moms
This Bible is perfect for busy moms who may sometimes find themselves overwhelmed with the stresses and responsibilities of motherhood. Each devotional is a direct reminder that we should strive to apply Scripture to all that we do and face, not only as Christian mothers, but as women, daughters, and friends. The translation, NIV, is simple to understand for those moms who may be new to reading and applying Scripture.

Great every dad Bible
This was the first Bible I purchased, and the first one I read 'cover to cover'. It's written in the NIV translation, which is often called the most popular. It is easy to read, yet has a lot of the 'pretty' language. The devotions are great for new (and old!) moms, and really relate the Scripture to life we (as moms) might expect.

Perfect for any mother or mother to be!
This book is a wonderful addition to new mom or mother to be. There are wonderful passages dealing with mom's and mothering issues and reminds us to keep our head high when dealing with the stress of parenthood!

Note Grouping: A Method for Achieving Expression and Style in Musical Performance
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (August, 1982)
Author: James Morgan Thurmond
Average review score:

An extraordinary Book...
This is one of those very rare books about music performance that is actually useful to the performing musician (as well as the devoted listener). It describes the historical basis of our perception of rhythm, its expressive impact, and its practical application. It has had an enormous impact on me both as a performer and a teacher is an invaluable tool for all musicians! I give it my highest recommendation!

Good insight on interpretation
My trumpet teacher in college, Charles Schlueter of the Boston Symphony, recommended this book to all of his students. I learned a great deal on expressive playing. This is very helpfull to young and accoplished musicians alike.

Expressive muscianship explained
Fully explains through musical example, the concept of expressive musicianship as taught by Anton Horner, William Kincaid and Marcel Tabuteau. This book clearly illustrates how to teach students to play or sing with expression, musicianship and style and will help to make your performances "come alive".

"Here in print are exactly the concepts I was taught by Robert Shaw and Julius Herford...it has had a profound influence upon music education everywhere!" Weston H. Noble Director of Music Activities, Luther College

Dr. Thurmond has had a profound impact on musicians all over the world. This book unlocks the secrets of playing musically. A must for all players and teachers!

The Power of Pleasurable Childbirth: Safety, Simplicity, and Satisfaction Are All Within Our Reach
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (January, 2003)
Authors: LaurieAnnis Morgan and Laurie Annis Morgan
Average review score:

Original and inspiring!
The self can be trusted. This is the message behind Laurie Morgan's beautifully written book, The Power of Pleasurable Childbirth. In this fascinating exploration of modern-day birth practices, Laurie at last answers the question posed by many advocates of non-interventive birth - "Why not just hire a midwife?" Having never had a midwife-assisted birth myself, this was a question I could not fully answer in my own book, Unassisted Childbirth.

Citing examples from her own midwife-assisted birth, as well as those of other women, Laurie proves that the term "non-interventive midwife" is an oxymoron. Birth, like other natural bodily functions, requires privacy. Simply the presence of a midwife at a birth is an intervention. Add to this the fact that midwives are generally required by law to intervene and it is obvious that for a birth to be truly "pleasurable," it cannot be assisted.

Yet Laurie doesn't condemn midwives (or doctors, for that matter) or claim their intentions aren't honorable. In fact, she encourages women to use them as resources - "pick their brains" for what bits of wisdom they DO possess. Just don't assume their presence at birth is necessary or desirable.

The most inspiring parts of the book for me were Laurie's own unassisted birth stories. It is clear that all of her births were both life-changing events, and "ordinary miracles." Her joyful proclamation following her first unassisted birth sums up her feelings beautifully - "Pop a cork! I feel like having a party!"

This book was a joy to read and I highly recommend it to all couples, regardless of how or where they plan to give birth.

Birth Books Are My Passion
Birth books are my passion. Yet I have long ago stopped reading those that keep the prevailing myth in place -- that is, birth is innately painful. I had three babies without pain and wondered where Laurie Morgan has been all of my life when I picked up her book?

The Power of Pleasureable Childbirth is totally validating! As Ms Morgan points out, birth looks to be inherently painful in our society. In other words, our fear of birth is inherited. I figured this out decades ago, with the help of Dr. Grantley Dick-Read and my own babies. As with any legacy from the past, I can choose which ones to carry on. Ecstatic birth has everything going for it whereas the norm -- fear/pain/drugs in birth -- is an old story that no longer serves anyone.

I plan on giving this book to all of my grandchildren. Along with the book, Prenatal Yoga and Natural Childbirth, this will go a long way toward bringing more peace to all our relations. If there is one book to turn the angle of this culture's eye toward the light that birth can be, it is The Power of Pleasureable Childbirth. Thank you Laurie Morgan!

Laurie's Mom Speaks
You should know up front that I'm in this book, in a variety of ways: I'm Laurie's mom, the kids' Grandma Annis, and one of the many hard-working editors who helped get this exciting text into print. So, yes, I am a biased reader/reviewer. I'm also an English teacher of 30+ years with lots of reading and editing experience. I'm here to tell you that this book is different from any other you've ever read, on this or any subject. From its intimate detail to its fearless proselytizing, you will be gripped from start to finish. The Power of Pleasurable Childbirth is definitely an "I can't put it down" kind of book. This book is not for the faint of heart or for those who don't want to be bothered by alternatives to the medicalized birth industry in this country. It IS for anyone who cares about life and love and children. Whether you end up agreeing or disagreeing with the writer, your preconceptions will be challenged and your hopes confirmed. This is not a book to "enjoy," but rather one to learn from, question, and remember.

Practical Computer Network Analysis and Design (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking)
Published in Hardcover by Morgan Kaufmann (March, 1998)
Author: James D. McCabe
Average review score:

Network Design Done Right
In the vast body of knowledge dedicated to network design this book stands out as a single, shining example of how to do it right.

The approach given in this book is to focus on the larger end goal, providing services via the network, instead of the lower-level technical details. This approach requires greater emphasis on requirements to which three chapters are devoted. Mr. McCabe's treatment of requirements gathering and analysis is among the best in literature and is consistent with best practices that are performed by other engineering disciplines.

What I especially like about this book, however, is the flow analysis that ensures you will produce a network design that has the following characteristics: (1) traceable to requirements, (2) focused on providing application response and network services to users, and (3) is a solid baseline for performance and capacity management of the network as it evolves.

If all networks were designed using the approach and techniques provided in this book service level management would be a less daunting endeavor. This is a five star book that adds a true engineering methodology to network design.

Network Design Revealed!
This book is amazing. Design, of any type, is an artform. Jim McCabe is an amazing artist. He has a unique grasp of the design process. Networks are notoriously complex systems to design; so many layers, so much technology, so much interdependence. Jim has captured the essence of this non-linear design process and has distilled it quite elegantly. This is an excellent primer on design in general, on networks particularly and ATM based networks most specifically.

Useful and practical advice for network managers
I am a network teacher that is preparing two courses: "Network engineering", which has to do with network design from a systems point of view. (ex. thinking about the network in a bigger context, including hosts, service, etc.) and "Information Flow analysis" which deaks with the how-to's of elaborating a workflow model for networks and planning networks based on information flow. I have read this book and have found that it thoroughly addresses all the areas these two courses will cover. I will use it as a text and reference throughout the course of the term and would encourage others to do so as well.

Practical Solutions to Everyday Challenges for Children with Asperger Syndrome

Author: Haley Morgan Myles
Average review score:

Finally a book for children with Asperger Syndrome
Haley Myles explains in a easy to understand manner what a child can do when they get into those 'what should I do' moments. Topics are covered that every child needs to know and gives advice in a straightforward child friendly way. Nine-year-old Haley Myles writes with a special sensitivity, understanding the difficulties that children with Asperger Syndrome face. This book is an excellent resource for children with Asperger Syndrome.

Great resource to deal with life's events for those with AS!
I work with children with Asperger Syndrome and have highly recommended this book to my families that are in need of solutions to daily issues. It an easy-to-read format written by a young girl who has thought to answer questions that I would have never even thought to ask. Lot of details...if you have a child with AS...you know that he or she is probably into those details. :) Perfectly written for a child or teen's audience, this book covers topics such as how to locate family if you get lost from them in a store, manners, conversations, and much more!

An excellent book for children with AS (and all children)
When I bought this book for my child, he immediately read it. He now tells us the rules for all the situations he learned in the Practical Solutions book. It is wonderful and a true gift to children! When I had the chance to read the book (after my child went to bed), I found how truly wonderful it was! Thanks for helping my child learn things I never thought to teach. This is a true survival guide!
